Winter Session 2019-2020: Michael Lanthier for the year-long course HIST 103: World History Since 1900. Responsible for fifty students with weekly discussion sections (three sections of 10-18 students). Conducted collaborative research on online pedagogy, implementing findings in transition to online tutorials at the end of the 2019-20 year. Attended monthly training sessions on marking, student mental health, and other topics as ongoing TA training for the department.
Winter Session 2020-2021: Teaching assistant for Dr. Allen Sens, Political Science and International Relations, for the year-long course HIST 425: War & Society. Responsible for all four tutorials for the course and a total of 72 students. The Faculty of Arts was fully remote learning for this year, meaning the entire course took place digitally, requiring me to learn advanced online pedagogy. Responsible for managing and monitoring digital interactions including discussion posts, lecture chats, and weekly discussion groups that blended synchronous and asynchronous pedagogy.
- Hannah, I certainly would. Not only was she the most prepared and organised TA I have ever had … but Hannah encouraged learning at every opportunity. She effectively spurred conversation and polite debate about related course topics, she challenged us to think outside of our own perspective, and she effectively helped us apply course work to very realistic topics we could relate to.”
- “Hannah is one of the best TAs I’ve had. I was consistently excited to attend my tutorial because of Hannah’s energy and ability to create a positive class atmosphere even when dealing with difficult subject matter. With this difficult subject matter, I appreciate Hannah’s proactivity in setting the framework for how we would them and I believe this is why our discussions never got out of hand.”

- “Hannah brings a positive attitude in our discussions and creates a respectful environment in class through the chat box. Hannah gives very helpful, individually tailored feedback on our papers, which is a teaching strategy that demonstrates her assiduity and attentiveness to our learning process. Hannah was also flexible with dates and deadlines, and she is understanding of personal problems that affected my life. So, overall, her attitude to students is inspiring!”
- “Hannah has been the best TA I have ever had and has been the highlight of my final year at UBC. Hannah is very knowledgeable, engaging, and kind and has made our discussion group a very safe and comfortable space for students. Hannah is very understanding and receptive to the various barriers impacting students at this time, which has allowed for students to remain engaged in their learning without sacrificing their health. I am sad that Hannah will no longer be my TA. Please give her a nice award or something.”
